The basics, briefly

What Is a Birth Chart?

A birth chart, also called a natal chart, is a map of the sky at the exact moment and location of your birth. Every planet was positioned somewhere in the zodiac at that moment. A free birth chart calculator shows you those positions — your sun sign, moon sign, rising sign, and every other planetary placement — so you can read your chart rather than a generic horoscope written for one-twelfth of the population.

What Are Planetary Transits?

Planetary transits happen when a planet moving through the current sky forms a significant angle to a planet in your natal chart. A transit calculator compares today's planetary positions to your birth placements and surfaces the aspects that are actively influencing your chart right now. This is how astrology becomes personal rather than general.

Sun, Moon, and Rising Signs

Most people know their sun sign from their birthday. Fewer know their moon sign, which changes every 2-3 days and requires your birth date. Fewer still know their rising sign, which changes every two hours and requires both your birth time and birth city. All three together give a far more accurate picture of your astrology than the sun sign column you grew up reading.

How to Read Your Natal Chart

Reading a birth chart starts with understanding each planet's role: the Sun governs identity, the Moon governs emotional needs, Mercury governs how you think, Venus governs what you value, Mars governs how you pursue things, Jupiter governs where you find opportunity, and Saturn governs where life demands the most from you. Each planet's sign modifies how that energy expresses.

Common Questions

How accurate is a free birth chart calculator?

Planetary positions are calculated using published ephemeris data and are accurate to within one degree for most planets. The Moon moves fast enough that birth time improves accuracy. Rising sign calculation requires birth time and city to be precise.

What if I don't know my birth time?

You can still calculate all planetary positions except the Rising sign. The Moon placement may be off by a sign if you were born close to a sign boundary. All other planets — Sun through Saturn — calculate accurately from date alone.

What is the difference between a natal chart and a transit chart?

Your natal chart is fixed — it is the sky at your birth. A transit chart shows where the planets are right now. Astrology becomes timing-relevant when you compare the two: current planetary positions hitting your natal placements create the transits that are active for you specifically today.

Do I need an account to use these tools?

No. Both the birth chart calculator and transit snapshot are free and require no account. Enter your birth data, get your result. The tools run entirely in your browser.
