Most people know their sun sign from their birthday. Fewer know their moon sign, which changes every 2-3 days and requires your birth date. Fewer still know their rising sign, which changes every two hours and requires both your birth time and birth city. All three together give a far more accurate picture of your astrology than the sun sign column you grew up reading.
Reading a birth chart starts with understanding each planet's role: the Sun governs identity, the Moon governs emotional needs, Mercury governs how you think, Venus governs what you value, Mars governs how you pursue things, Jupiter governs where you find opportunity, and Saturn governs where life demands the most from you. Planetary positions are calculated using published ephemeris data and are accurate to within one degree for most planets. The Moon moves fast enough that birth time improves accuracy. Rising sign calculation requires birth time and city to be precise.
You can still calculate all planetary positions except the Rising sign. The Moon placement may be off by a sign if you were born close to a sign boundary. All other planets — Sun through Saturn — calculate accurately from date alone.
