Applying vs Separating Aspect

Every aspect between two planets has a direction of travel: the faster-moving planet is either approaching the exact degree of the aspect (applying) or moving away from it (separating). An applying aspect is one where the angular distance between the two planets is decreasing toward the exact angle. A separating aspect is one where that distance is increasing past the exact angle.

In traditional horary astrology, the distinction is operationally important. An applying aspect indicates that the matter in question is still coming together — the event, agreement, or connection has not yet fully formed. A separating aspect suggests the matter is concluded or passing. If you ask "will this deal happen?" and the significators are in a separating aspect, the traditional answer is no — the opportunity has already passed its peak.

In natal and transit work, the applying/separating distinction is more interpretive than decisive. An applying transit is generally considered stronger and more felt, building toward a climax, while a separating transit is considered to be releasing its tension. The period of exact conjunction, square, or opposition is the peak; the applying phase is the buildup and the separating phase is the release.
