Lunation

A complete lunar cycle from one new moon to the next, approximately 29.5 days, used in astrology as the basic timing unit for lunar magic, intention-setting, and emotional rhythm.

A lunation is the cycle between two consecutive new moons — the same point in the Moon's orbital relationship to the Sun, repeated. The full cycle takes about 29.5 days (the synodic month) and contains the familiar phases: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent, and back to new.

In astrology, the lunation cycle is the most reliable short-term timing tool. New moons are associated with beginnings, intention-setting, and seeding. Full moons are associated with culmination, visibility, and release. The waxing phase between them is for building, and the waning phase between full moon and new is for clearing and integrating.

A new moon or full moon that falls on or near one of your natal planets is treated as personally significant. A full moon at 22 degrees Libra activates the natal placements you have between roughly 19 and 25 degrees of the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn). A new moon in your tenth house often coincides with career beginnings; in your fourth house, with home and family beginnings.

Eclipses are special lunations: solar eclipses are new moons that fall close enough to a lunar node to dim the Sun, and lunar eclipses are full moons that fall close enough to a node to dim the Moon. Eclipse lunations are interpreted as carrying more weight than ordinary ones, often marking events whose significance becomes clearer over the months that follow.
