Tropical Zodiac

The tropical zodiac is a coordinate system that divides the ecliptic into twelve equal 30-degree segments, beginning at the vernal equinox — the moment each spring when the Sun crosses the celestial equator moving northward. This point, by definition, is 0 degrees Aries in the tropical system.

The tropical zodiac is the standard for almost all Western astrology, including ZODIA. Its defining feature is that it is anchored to the seasons rather than to the visible stars. Because of the precession of the equinoxes — the slow wobble of Earth's axis over 26,000 years — the tropical signs no longer line up with the constellations of the same name. The constellation of Aries currently sits roughly where the tropical sign of Taurus begins.

This drift is the source of the recurring "your sign is wrong" articles that appear in mainstream press. Those articles are technically correct about the constellations but miss the point: tropical astrology was never about which constellation the Sun was in front of. It is about Earth's relationship to the Sun across the seasonal year. The tropical zero point marks spring, and the system is internally consistent.

The alternative is the sidereal zodiac, which adjusts for precession and tries to keep the signs aligned with the constellations. Sidereal astrology is dominant in Vedic (Indian) traditions. The two systems produce different sign placements for almost everyone — your tropical Sun and your sidereal Sun will usually be in different signs.
