First, the good news
A birth chart is a snapshot of the exact sky the minute you were born, worked out from three things: your birth date, your birth time, and your birth city. People worry that a missing time ruins the whole thing. It does not. Think of it this way: the date and the city tell us where the Sun, the Moon, and every planet sat in the sky. Only the exact minute tells us how that sky was turning over the horizon as you arrived.
That second part, the turning, is what gives you your rising sign, the zodiac sign that was coming up in the east at the moment of your birth. The rising sign also sets the 12 slices of the chart, called houses, that map onto areas of life like money, home, and relationships. Those are the pieces that need the clock.
Everything else, which is most of your chart, comes from the date and the city alone. So if you do not know your time, you have not lost the reading. You have lost one layer of it, and there are good ways to work around that layer or fill it in later.
The 3-step decision tree
Before you panic or pay for anything, walk through these three questions. Most people land between Step 1 and Step 2, with enough to read about 80% of the chart correctly.
Do you know your exact time?
Check your long-form birth certificate, baby book, or a hospital record. The long-form certificate from a state vital records office usually has the time. Short-form certificates (the wallet card or PDF) often do not.

Do you know a window? (morning vs evening, before vs after lunch)
A parent or grandparent might remember "right before dinner" or "in the small hours". Family bibles and old photo albums sometimes log a rough block. Even a two-hour window is useful.
Yes → Use the midpoint of the window. This gets you roughly 90% accuracy on the rising sign in most cases. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so a four-hour window narrows it to one or two options.
You have no idea?
Use a standard stand-in chart. There are two common ones, and both are accepted by professional astrologers. Both keep the Sun, the planets, and the Moon (most of the time) accurate. The life areas (houses) become a best guess rather than exact.
Default → a noon chart (set to 12:00 PM in your birth city) gives you the right Moon sign for most dates. Alternative → a solar chart (which puts your Sun where the rising sign would go) is the version astrologers reach for when the time is unknown. Try both and pick whichever feels closer when you read the descriptions.
What stays accurate without a birth time
Roughly 80% of the chart still works. The parts that depend on how the sky was turning (rising sign, life areas) need the time. Everything below depends only on the date, so it is solid.

A daily reading, a weekly outlook, and ongoing planet tracking all work without a birth time. The reading talks about what your Venus is going through and how a moving planet is lining up with your Saturn. None of that needs the time of day you were born.
What changes when you do not know your time
Four things need the time. They all depend on which slice of the sky was rising over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born.

The life areas are the layer you lose. A solar chart (which puts your Sun where the rising sign would go) fills that gap with a sensible best guess, and most people find it still tells them something useful.
Finding your birth time: 5 methods
In order of cost. Try the first three before you pay for the fifth.
Long-form birth certificate
The long-form certificate from your state vital records office usually lists the time. The short-form (wallet card or PDF) often leaves it off. In the US, request it from the state vital records office where you were born. Fees run $5 to $30, processing 2 to 6 weeks.
Hospital records
Send a written request to the hospital where you were born. Medical records departments keep birth records for decades. US fees $5 to $30, processing 2 to 6 weeks. Photo ID and a signed authorization are usually required. If the hospital closed or merged, the records may sit with the local vital records office.
Family memory and cross-references
Ask a parent, grandparent, or godparent. Check a baby book, a family bible, a photo album with timestamps. Cross-reference at least two sources. Memory is shaky on clock times after a few years, so if two sources agree within an hour, use the midpoint.
Solar chart workaround

Moon sign by date of birth
The Moon spends about 2.5 days in each sign, so most birth dates fall safely inside one Moon sign for the full 24 hours. The one exception: if you were born within about 3 hours of the Moon switching signs, you need the time to know which one is yours.

Should I pay to have my birth time estimated?
Paying an astrologer to estimate your time (rectification) is worth $200 to $500 only if two things are true. First, you genuinely want the exact 12 life areas. Second, you have at least 5 major dated events to anchor the estimate.
Good dated events: parents marrying or divorcing, a sibling's birthday, a big move, a serious illness or surgery, a graduation, a marriage, a major career change, the death of a parent, the birth of your first child. The more clearly dated events you have, the tighter the estimate.
Skip it if you have fewer than 5 datable events, or if you mostly want daily readings and weekly outlooks (those work without a time). A solar chart plus a noon chart costs nothing and gets you about 80% of the way there.
