A conjunction is the closest possible aspect: two planets occupying the same degree of the ecliptic. When two bodies are conjunct, their meanings blend rather than interact at a distance. A Sun-Mercury conjunction, for example, ties identity (Sun) directly to thinking and communication (Mercury), producing a person whose self-concept is bound up with how they talk and what they know.
Conjunctions can be supportive or difficult depending on which planets are involved. Venus conjunct Jupiter is generally felt as fortunate — affection, generosity, and ease working in the same direction. Mars conjunct Saturn is more demanding — drive and discipline competing for the same airspace, often producing both frustration and remarkable productive capacity.
The orb for a conjunction is typically generous. Two planets within 8 degrees of each other are often treated as conjunct for natal interpretation, with tighter orbs (1–3 degrees) for the most precise effects. For transits, ZODIA uses planet-specific orbs, with wider tolerances for slow-moving bodies like Saturn and Jupiter where the conjunction lasts for weeks or months.
When a transiting planet forms a conjunction with one of your natal planets, the effect is usually pronounced. Saturn conjunct your natal Sun is one of the heaviest transits in astrology — a multi-month compression on identity that the chart's owner is unlikely to forget. Jupiter conjunct your natal Venus is among the most pleasurable.
