Opposition

An aspect formed when two planets are 180 degrees apart, creating a direct face-off that often manifests as polarization or a need to balance opposing demands.

An opposition occurs when two planets sit on opposite sides of the chart, exactly 180 degrees apart. The opposing planets are always in opposite signs (Aries opposite Libra, Taurus opposite Scorpio, and so on) and almost always in opposite houses, depending on the system. The geometric symmetry produces a specific kind of tension: two forces facing each other, each pulling in its own direction.

In interpretation, oppositions are often felt as polarities that demand balance or as relationships in which one side is projected onto another person. A Sun opposition Moon person, for example, may experience their identity (Sun) and emotional needs (Moon) as being in chronic conflict — and may also tend to find partners who embody one pole while they live the other.

Oppositions are not inherently bad. They are dynamic and productive when the two sides can be integrated into a working tension rather than treated as a war. Many of the most effective people have prominent oppositions in their charts and have learned to use the polarity as a generator rather than a problem.

Transit oppositions are notable timing markers. Saturn opposite your natal Sun (which happens roughly every 14–15 years and most famously around your Saturn opposition at age 14 and again at 44) coincides with major life-direction reviews.
