Trine

A 120-degree aspect between two planets, traditionally considered the most harmonious and supportive relationship in a chart.

A trine is an angular distance of 120 degrees between two planets. Trine planets are always in signs of the same element — Aries trine Leo trine Sagittarius (fire), Taurus trine Virgo trine Capricorn (earth), Gemini trine Libra trine Aquarius (air), Cancer trine Scorpio trine Pisces (water). This shared elemental quality is part of what makes the trine feel cooperative: the two planets are speaking the same energetic language.

In traditional astrology, the trine is the most fortunate of the major aspects. It indicates ease, flow, natural talent, and effortless cooperation between the planets involved. A Venus trine Jupiter person is rarely short of charm or generosity. A Mercury trine Saturn person can usually concentrate when others cannot.

The modern interpretation is slightly more nuanced. Trines are easy, but ease is not the same as growth. Many astrologers note that trine talents tend to be taken for granted by their owners precisely because they come without effort, while square talents are developed harder and more consciously. The chart with mostly trines can underperform; the chart with mostly squares can overperform once it learns to use the friction.

Transit trines are generally welcome but usually quiet. A Jupiter trine to your natal Sun might bring an opportunity, but it tends to require you to recognize and accept it — the trine does not force the issue the way a square would.
