Square

A 90-degree aspect between two planets, considered tense and challenging, but also the source of motivation, friction, and developmental growth in a chart.

A square is an angular distance of 90 degrees between two planets. Square planets are always three signs apart and almost always in signs of the same modality but different elements: cardinal squares cardinal, fixed squares fixed, mutable squares mutable. The shared modality is what gives the square its characteristic friction — both planets want the same kind of action (initiation, persistence, or adaptation) but pull it in incompatible directions.

In traditional terms, the square is a "hard" or "challenging" aspect. It produces internal tension and external friction. A Mars square Saturn person often experiences the conflict between drive (Mars) and limitation (Saturn) as a chronic internal battle, especially earlier in life. A Sun square Moon person may feel the conflict between conscious will and emotional need as a persistent ambivalence.

The contemporary interpretation gives squares more credit than the traditional one did. Squares are uncomfortable, but discomfort is often where development happens. People with prominent squares tend to be motivated to work on the areas of friction in a way that people with corresponding trines do not need to. The square is the chart's engine room.

Transit squares are when most of the felt action of a transit happens. A Saturn square to your natal Sun is often the most pressured part of a multi-year Saturn transit cycle. A Mars square is a brief but sharp activation that frequently coincides with arguments, accidents, or sudden energy surges.
