Direct Motion

The normal forward movement of a planet through the zodiac (in the direction of increasing ecliptic longitude), as opposed to its retrograde periods.

Direct motion is the default state of a planet — the forward motion through the zodiac in the direction of increasing ecliptic longitude. From the geocentric perspective used in astrology, planets normally move from Aries through Taurus through Gemini and so on. Retrograde periods are interruptions of this default; the rest of the time, every planet is moving direct.

When a planet "stations direct" or "goes direct," it has just finished a retrograde period and is resuming its forward motion. This moment is treated as significant in transit work. Many astrologers consider the days around a planet's direct station to be the moment when whatever was being reviewed or revisited during the retrograde begins to move forward into action.

In ephemeris notation, direct motion is sometimes left unmarked (as the assumed default) and retrograde periods are flagged with an "R" or a backwards arrow. ZODIA's underlying ephemeris carries this information and uses it for retrograde detection, but the daily reading typically describes the qualitative effect rather than the technical motion.

A planet at the moment of stationing — either retrograde or direct — is moving more slowly than at any other time, which gives that day extra astrological weight. A planet stationing on or near one of your natal placements is treated as a particularly emphasized transit.
