Stationary

The brief period when a planet is shifting between direct and retrograde motion, appearing nearly motionless against the background sky and considered astrologically powerful.

A planet is stationary when its apparent motion through the zodiac drops to nearly zero. This happens twice in every retrograde cycle: once at the station retrograde (the moment direct motion stops and reverses) and once at the station direct (the moment retrograde motion stops and resumes forward). The stationary period typically lasts a day or two, during which the planet barely moves.

Stationary planets are interpreted as carrying extra weight in any chart they touch. A natal planet that is exactly stationary at the moment of birth is treated as especially emphasized in the personality, often producing someone for whom that planet's themes are unusually pronounced. A transiting planet that stations on or near one of your natal placements is also amplified — the slow motion concentrates the influence in time.

Mercury stationary, in particular, is associated with the strongest version of the Mercury retrograde effect: communications snarl, technology fails, travel plans wobble. Saturn stationary is famously heavy and slow. Jupiter stationary often coincides with a key opportunity arriving (or being held in place until the next move).
