Element (Fire, Earth, Air, Water)

A four-fold classification of the zodiac signs into fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), and water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces).

The four elements — fire, earth, air, and water — are the most basic classification scheme in zodiac astrology. Each sign belongs to exactly one element, and the three signs of each element share certain underlying qualities. Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are active, expressive, and identity-driven. Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) are practical, embodied, and concerned with material reality. Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) are conceptual, social, and concerned with relationships and ideas. Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) are emotional, intuitive, and concerned with the inner life.

A chart's elemental balance is a quick-read summary of the personality. A chart with most planets in earth signs reads very differently from one with most planets in fire. Charts that lack an element entirely (no planets in any water sign, for example) often produce a felt absence of that element's qualities — not as a deficit but as a noticeable shape.

The elements pair into compatibility clusters. Fire and air get along well (both are active, outward-facing, fast-moving). Earth and water get along well (both are receptive, slower, more interior). Fire and water can clash. Earth and air can clash. These pairings are the geometric basis for which signs trine each other and which signs sextile each other.

The elements are also one of the oldest layers of astrology. The four-element scheme was inherited from Greek natural philosophy, predating the formal zodiac as we know it, and the qualities assigned to each element have remained remarkably stable across two thousand years of astrological writing.
