A three-fold classification of the zodiac signs by their mode of action: cardinal (initiating), fixed (stabilizing), and mutable (adapting).

The modalities — also called qualities or quadruplicities — divide the twelve zodiac signs into three groups of four. The cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) initiate. The fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) stabilize and persist. The mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) adapt and transition. Each element appears once in each modality, producing the twelve unique sign-element-modality combinations.

The cardinal signs begin each season: Aries begins spring, Cancer begins summer, Libra begins autumn, Capricorn begins winter. They are associated with starting things, taking action, and initiating change. People with prominent cardinal placements tend to be the ones who get things moving.

The fixed signs are the middle of each season — the deepest expression, the most stable phase. People with prominent fixed placements tend to commit, hold their ground, and resist being moved. They are the persisters of the zodiac.

The mutable signs are the end of each season — the transitional phase where one mode is letting go and the next is preparing to begin. People with prominent mutable placements tend to be flexible, adaptable, and capable of holding contradictions without forcing resolution. The cost is sometimes a difficulty in committing or settling.
