An ingress is the moment a planet crosses from one zodiac sign into the next. Mercury ingressing into Cancer, for example, is the moment the planet leaves the last degree of Gemini and enters the first degree of Cancer. From that moment on, the qualitative coloring of Mercury's expression changes from the Gemini mode to the Cancer mode.

Ingresses are central to mundane astrology (the astrology of world events) and to long-term transit forecasting. A planet's entry into a new sign often coincides with shifts in cultural or political mood, especially for the slow-moving outer planets.
