The julian date (JD) is a numbering system for days that runs continuously from a reference moment in the distant past. Day zero begins at noon UT on January 1, 4713 BCE in the proleptic Julian calendar. The current julian date in early 2026 is approximately 2,460,800. Times within a day are expressed as fractions: noon UT is JD 0.0, midnight is JD 0.5.

The point of julian date is to make astronomical math easy. Calendars are messy: leap years, time zones, daylight saving transitions, calendar reforms (the Gregorian shift), and historical irregularities all complicate any attempt to compute the time elapsed between two events. Julian date strips all of that away — the difference between any two julian dates is the elapsed time in days, no matter what calendar systems span the interval.

Almost every modern astrology and astronomy program uses julian date internally, even when displaying conventional dates to the user. Sidereal time is computed from julian date. Ephemeris lookup is indexed by julian date. The standard formula for the ascendant takes julian date as one of its inputs (via julian centuries since J2000.0).

ZODIA's birth chart calculator converts the user's entered date and time (corrected for the historical timezone of the birthplace) into a julian date, and then performs all astronomical computation from that single number. This is why birth time accuracy matters — the julian date encodes the moment to a precision of seconds, and downstream calculations propagate that precision into the chart.
