Sidereal Time

Sidereal time measures Earth's rotation relative to the fixed stars, while the civil clock measures it relative to the Sun. A sidereal day is approximately 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds — about four minutes shorter than a solar day. Over the course of a year, this difference adds up to one complete extra rotation, which is why the night sky appears in slightly different positions at the same clock time as the year progresses.

For astrology, sidereal time is what allows the rising sign to be calculated. The ascendant is determined by the local sidereal time at the moment of birth, combined with the geographic latitude. Without sidereal time, there is no rising sign and no house system — both depend entirely on knowing how Earth was rotated at the exact moment of birth.

Greenwich Mean Sidereal Time (GMST) is the sidereal time at the prime meridian. Local Sidereal Time (LST) is GMST adjusted for the longitude of the birthplace. ZODIA's rising sign calculation derives LST from a julian date computation, applies the standard astronomical formula for ascendant from LST and latitude, and returns the result. The math is closed-form and verifiable.

Because the sidereal day is slightly shorter than the solar day, the rising sign for a given clock time changes by approximately one degree every four minutes. This is why birth time accuracy matters so much for the rising sign: even a 10-minute uncertainty in birth time can shift the ascendant by 2 to 3 degrees, and a 30-minute uncertainty can change the rising sign entirely if the birth happens near a sign boundary.
