Midheaven

The midheaven, often abbreviated as MC (from the Latin Medium Coeli, "middle of the sky"), is the point where the ecliptic crosses the local meridian at the moment of birth. It represents the highest point in the sky that the Sun would reach during its daily arc on the day of your birth, although the actual Sun is rarely at the midheaven unless you were born around local solar noon.

The midheaven is the cusp of the tenth house and is interpreted as the most public-facing point in the chart. It describes the role you become known for, the work you are visible doing, the reputation you accumulate, and the version of yourself that exists in the social world rather than in the private one. Where the ascendant is the threshold of the body, the midheaven is the threshold of the career.

Because the midheaven depends only on the right ascension of the meridian (which equals local sidereal time), it does not require latitude in the same way the ascendant does. The midheaven moves through all twelve signs in 24 hours and changes by about one degree every four minutes — making birth time accuracy as important for the midheaven as it is for the ascendant.

The opposite of the midheaven is the IC (Imum Coeli, "bottom of the sky"), which marks the cusp of the fourth house. The IC represents the private, ancestral, foundational aspects of life — what is rooted, where you come from, the home you build inside yourself. The MC/IC axis is one of the four cardinal axes of the chart, alongside the ascendant/descendant axis.
