Right ascension (RA) is one of the two coordinates astronomers use to locate objects on the celestial sphere. It is the equivalent of longitude on the celestial equator, measured eastward from the vernal equinox point. By convention, right ascension is expressed in hours, minutes, and seconds rather than in degrees: 24 hours equals one full rotation of 360 degrees, so one hour of RA equals 15 degrees.
In astrology, right ascension is most relevant for the calculation of the midheaven and the ascendant. The midheaven is determined by the right ascension of the meridian (RAMC) at the moment of birth. RAMC is functionally equivalent to local sidereal time expressed in degrees, and it is the input that astrological house system formulas use to compute the cusps.
Most users will never see right ascension in a finished birth chart, because chart software converts everything to ecliptic longitude (sign and degree) before display. But under the hood, the calculation chain runs julian date → sidereal time → RAMC → ascendant and midheaven → house cusps. RA is the bridge between the rotation of Earth and the geometry of the chart.
