Declination is the celestial-sphere equivalent of latitude on Earth. It measures how far north or south a body sits relative to the celestial equator, expressed in degrees from -90 (the south celestial pole) to +90 (the north celestial pole). The Sun reaches a maximum declination of approximately +23.4 degrees at the summer solstice and -23.4 degrees at the winter solstice; this maximum is set by the obliquity of the ecliptic.
In astrology, declination is the basis for two specialized aspects: the parallel (when two bodies share the same declination on the same side of the equator) and the contraparallel (when they share the same numerical declination but on opposite sides). These aspects are not visible in a standard ecliptic chart and require a separate declination table to find.
Out-of-bounds planets are bodies whose declination exceeds the Sun's maximum of approximately 23.4 degrees. This happens occasionally with Mercury, Venus, Mars, the Moon, Pluto, and rarely the other planets. An out-of-bounds planet is interpreted as operating outside its usual constraints — moving with more independence and less normalization. Out-of-bounds Moons in particular are a notable feature of many natal charts of unconventional public figures.
ZODIA does not currently surface declination aspects in the free birth chart calculator, but the underlying ephemeris contains the data, and parallels and contraparallels can be added as a future feature for users who specifically follow declination work.
