The obliquity of the ecliptic is the tilt of Earth's rotational axis relative to the plane of its orbit around the Sun. As of the early 21st century, this angle is approximately 23 degrees 26 minutes, or about 23.44 degrees in decimal form. The obliquity is what produces the seasons: when the northern hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun, it experiences summer; when tilted away, winter.
For astrology, the obliquity (often written as ε or epsilon) is one of the inputs to the ascendant formula. The standard equation for the ascendant from the right ascension of the meridian (RAMC) and geographic latitude (φ) is: arctan2(cos H, -sin ε · tan φ - cos ε · sin H), where H is the RAMC expressed in radians. Without obliquity, this formula does not produce a correct rising sign.
The obliquity changes very slowly over time, oscillating between roughly 22.1 and 24.5 degrees over a 41,000-year cycle. For practical natal chart calculation, the value at the moment of birth is used, computed from a polynomial formula in terms of julian centuries since J2000.0. ZODIA's rising sign code uses the standard formula: ε = 23.439291° - 0.013004167° × T, where T is julian centuries since J2000.
Because obliquity affects the relationship between the celestial equator and the ecliptic, it also affects every coordinate transformation between RA/Dec and ecliptic longitude/latitude. The same physical position in the sky is described by different numerical values in different coordinate systems, and obliquity is the conversion key.
