Out of Bounds

A condition in which a planet's declination exceeds the Sun's maximum of approximately 23.4 degrees, producing an interpretation of unusual independence or operating outside normal limits.

A planet is out of bounds when its declination is greater than approximately 23 degrees 26 minutes — the maximum declination the Sun ever reaches because of the obliquity of the ecliptic. The Sun, being the reference for the obliquity, is never out of bounds. Other planets occasionally are: Mercury, Venus, Mars, the Moon, and (rarely) the outer planets can all reach declinations beyond the solar limit.

In astrological interpretation, out-of-bounds planets are read as operating outside the normal constraints of the rest of the chart. They are treated as having a kind of extra freedom or wildness — for better and for worse. An out-of-bounds Moon is often associated with unusual emotional intensity or with people whose inner lives do not match the conventional pattern. An out-of-bounds Mars is often associated with people whose drive, anger, or ambition runs beyond what others expect.

The Moon goes out of bounds for a few days every month or two, depending on its 18.6-year nodal cycle. There are years (during the major nodal extreme) when the Moon is out of bounds for several days each month, and other years when it is rarely out of bounds at all. Mercury and Venus go out of bounds occasionally, Mars rarely.

A natal chart with an out-of-bounds personal planet is uncommon enough to be worth noticing. Many notable public figures — particularly artists, athletes, and political dissidents — have at least one out-of-bounds planet in their natal chart, which is part of what makes the configuration interesting to astrological biographers.
