First, what a birth chart actually is
Your birth chart (some people call it a natal chart, the same thing) is a snapshot of the exact sky the minute you were born, worked out from your birth date, birth time, and birth city. It is much more detailed than your star sign, the one tied to your birthday. Your star sign only knows where the Sun was. Your whole chart knows where the Moon and every planet sat, and which sign was rising in the east at that exact minute. That is why a full chart can describe you so much more closely than a one-size-fits-all horoscope.
The chart looks like a wheel split into slices, with little symbols dotted around it. Those symbols can look like a secret code at first, but they are not. By the end of this page you will know what each one means and, more importantly, the order to read them in. Read your chart in six steps
Here is the whole method, start to finish. Take it one step at a time. You do not need to finish all six in one sitting, and you will get more out of it if you do not try to.
Step 1
Find your big three
Start with your big three: your Sun, Moon, and Rising sign. Your Sun sign is your core self, the part most people mean when they say their star sign. Your Moon sign is your inner emotional world, how you feel and what comforts you in private. Your Rising sign (also called the Ascendant, the sign that was coming up over the horizon when you were born) is the first impression you give. These three are the backbone of your whole chart, and most people see themselves in their Moon and Rising even more than their Sun.
Step 2
Read the planets in their signs
Now go planet by planet. Each planet stands for one part of life, and the sign it sits in colors how that part works for you. Mercury is your mind, so Mercury's sign shows how you think and talk. Venus is love and taste, so Venus's sign shows how you show affection and what you find beautiful. Mars is drive, so Mars's sign shows how you go after what you want. Step 3
Read the houses as life areas
The chart wheel is split into 12 slices called houses. Each house is a part of life: money, home, work, relationships, and so on. A planet sitting in a house tells you where in your life that planet shows up most. Venus in the house of work, for example, points to charm and harmony mattering in your job. You do not need to memorize all 12 right now. The house grid below names each one in a single line, so you can glance at it whenever you need it.
Step 4
Note the aspects loosely
Look at the lines drawn across the middle of the wheel. These are aspects, the connections between two planets that show how those two parts of you talk to each other. Some connections feel easy, where the two planets help each other. Others feel like friction, where they pull in different directions. As a beginner you do not need exact angles or degrees. Just notice which planets are joined by a line and whether the link reads as smooth or tense. That is enough to start.
Step 5
Spot the patterns
Step back and look at the whole wheel for repeats. If three planets sit in one sign, that sign's style is loud in you. If several cluster in one house, that area of life is a big theme. Patterns like these tell you more than any single placement, because they show what comes up again and again.

Do not overwhelm yourself
You will not read the whole chart in one sitting, and you do not have to. A confident read of your big three beats a confused read of everything at once. The one rule that makes a chart readable
Every placement is built from three things, and once you can name all three you can read any line of a chart.
Planet, sign, house
Put together, a placement reads like a sentence. "Venus in Leo in the 5th house" reads as: love (planet), shown warmly and a little dramatically (sign), in the area of romance and creativity (house). Read every placement as what, how, where and the whole wheel opens up.
The symbols, decoded
The little marks scattered around the wheel are called glyphs, a kind of shorthand. Each planet and each of the 12 signs has one. You never have to memorize them, because any chart calculator labels them in words, but it helps to recognize the main planet symbols. Here are the ones you will meet first.

What if you do not know your birth time?
This worries a lot of beginners, so here is the honest answer. Most of your chart does not need the exact minute. Your Sun sign and nearly all your planet signs stay the same across a whole day, so you can read them with no time at all. Only two things need a time: your Rising sign, which can change every couple of hours, and the houses, which are built from it.
If you do not have your time, try your birth certificate, ask a parent, or request your records from the hospital or your country's birth registry. If you still cannot find it, read everything except the Rising sign and the houses, and treat those two as estimates. - There is more than one method for drawing the lines that split the wheel into 12 houses, and they can put a planet in slightly different slices.
