Generational Planets

Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto — the three slowest-moving outer planets, which spend years in each sign and therefore mark the cultural mood of the generation born during that period.

Generational planets are Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. They are grouped together because they move so slowly through the zodiac that everyone born within roughly the same decade shares the same sign placements for all three. Pluto in Scorpio (1983–1995), Neptune in Capricorn (1984–1998), Uranus in Capricorn (1988–1996) are characteristic of one cohort. The next cohort gets Pluto in Sagittarius, Neptune in Aquarius, Uranus in Aquarius, and so on.

The interpretive logic is that these slow planets describe the cultural mood and the structural changes a generation grows up inside. A generation born with Pluto in Scorpio will collectively grapple with themes of power, sexuality, hidden material, and transformation in ways their parents born under Pluto in Leo did not. The generational planets describe the air a cohort breathes, not the individual breathing it.

In an individual chart, the personal significance of a generational planet comes from its house placement (which is birth-time-specific and individual) and from the aspects it makes to the inner planets. Pluto in Scorpio in your second house squaring your Mars is significantly different from Pluto in Scorpio in your sixth house trining your Venus, even though the sign placement is shared with everyone in your age cohort.

Generational planet transits to other generational planets are also collective events. Saturn square Pluto, Uranus opposite Pluto, and similar configurations affect entire age groups at once and tend to coincide with broad cultural and political shifts.
