The slow-moving bodies — Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto — which describe broader life themes and generational influences because they spend years in each sign.
The outer planets are the slow-moving bodies in the chart: Jupiter (about a year per sign), Saturn (about 2.5 years per sign), Uranus (about 7 years per sign), Neptune (about 14 years per sign), and Pluto (12 to 32 years per sign, depending on its eccentric orbit). They move so slowly that everyone born within a span of months or years shares the same outer planet sign placements.
For this reason, the outer planets are often interpreted as describing themes rather than personal traits. The sign of your Pluto, for instance, is shared with everyone born in the same generation. What makes it personal in your chart is the house it occupies (which depends on your birth time) and the aspects it forms with your inner planets.
Jupiter and Saturn are sometimes grouped separately as the "social planets" because they move slowly enough to define generational waves but fast enough to mark personal turning points. The Saturn return, which happens around ages 28–30 and again around 58–60, is one of the most commonly cited and felt astrological events, marking the transition from one life phase to the next.
Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are the modern outer planets — they were not visible to the naked eye and were not part of traditional astrology. Some astrologers (the modern school) treat them as full members of the chart with rulerships of Aquarius, Pisces, and Scorpio respectively. Others (the traditional school) read charts using only the seven classical bodies and treat the outer planets as supplementary.
