Inner Planets

The fast-moving bodies in a chart — the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars — which describe personal traits and change positions quickly enough to vary noticeably from person to person.

The inner planets in astrological usage are the bodies that move quickly through the zodiac: the Sun (one sign per month), the Moon (one sign every 2.5 days), Mercury (a few weeks per sign), Venus (a few weeks per sign), and Mars (about six weeks per sign). They are sometimes called the personal planets because their fast motion means they describe individual variation rather than generational themes.

Two people born minutes apart will have nearly identical inner planet positions. Two people born a few days apart will share most of their inner planet placements except for the Moon, which is the fastest-moving body in the chart and can change signs within a single day. This is why birth time matters so much for the Moon and so little for, say, Pluto.

The inner planets are the workhorses of personal interpretation. The Sun describes core identity, the Moon describes emotional life, Mercury describes thinking and communication, Venus describes love and aesthetic taste, and Mars describes drive and action. A natal reading that does not engage with these five bodies is not really a reading.

Note that "inner planets" in astrology and astronomy do not perfectly overlap. Astronomically, the inner planets are the four rocky planets inside the asteroid belt: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. Astrologically, the term includes the Sun and Moon (which are not planets at all in the modern sense) and excludes Earth (which is the observation point, not a charted body).
