Your natal chart is a fixed snapshot of the sky at the moment you were born. It does not change. A transit chart is the sky right now, today, this hour, and it is always changing. Astrology, as a daily practice, happens where these two charts intersect, where the moving planets in the sky form geometric relationships to the planets frozen in your birth chart.

A natal chart is calculated from three pieces of information: your date of birth, time of birth, and place of birth. It maps the exact positions of the sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto at the moment you took your first breath, along with the Ascendant, Midheaven, and the twelve house cusps.
This chart is yours permanently. It describes your psychological architecture, the way you think, love, fight, create, and relate to authority. It does not predict what will happen to you. It describes the instrument you are playing. Two people born minutes apart in the same hospital will have nearly identical natal charts, but their lives will unfold differently because a chart is a set of potentials, not a script.
When someone says "I'm a Gemini with a Scorpio moon and Capricorn rising," they are reading from their natal chart. Every astrological placement you identify with is a natal placement.
A transit chart is simply the current sky. Right now, as you read this, the planets are in specific signs and degrees. That configuration is the transit chart for this moment. It changes constantly. The moon shifts signs every two and a half days. Mercury moves through a sign in about three weeks. Saturn takes roughly two and a half years per sign. Pluto takes twelve to thirty years.
A transit chart on its own, without reference to a natal chart, tells you the general weather. Saturn in Pisces describes a collective atmosphere of restructuring around faith, boundaries, and emotional systems. But it does not tell you what that means for you personally until you overlay it on your natal chart.
The real work of astrology is in the comparison. When transiting Saturn reaches the same degree as your natal Venus, you experience a Saturn-Venus transit. That transit asks you to mature in how you love, to take your relationships seriously, to confront what is not working. Someone else, whose natal Venus is in a different sign, will not feel that transit at the same time.
This is why sun sign horoscopes are limited. They treat all Geminis as though the sky is hitting their charts in the same place. It is not. Your natal chart has planets scattered across different signs and degrees, and the transiting planets activate those placements at different times. Start with the slow planets. Identify where transiting Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto currently sit, and check whether they are forming any major aspects to your natal planets. These are the big stories of your current chapter.
Then layer in the faster planets for daily texture. Where is the transiting moon today, and does it aspect anything in your chart. Where is Mars, and is it activating your natal Venus or your natal Saturn. Each day has a different combination, and the combinations stack.
The aspect type matters. Conjunctions and oppositions are the most intense. Squares create friction and forced growth. Trines and sextiles create ease and opportunity. But ease is not always better than friction. Some of the most productive periods in a life happen under hard transits.
Every meaningful astrological prediction requires both charts. The natal chart without transits is a portrait with no story. The transit chart without a natal chart is a weather report with no location. You need the intersection to say anything specific about a specific person on a specific day.
